Protect your workers from silica-related illness Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is found in stone, rocks, sands and clays. Exposure to RCS over a long period can cause fibrosis (hardening or scarring) of the lung tissue with a consequent loss of lung function.
HSE estimates that around 500 deaths occur every year as a result of workplace exposures to RCS in Great Britain. Occupations with exposure to RCS include: quarrying, slate works, foundries, potteries, stonemasonry, construction and industries using silica flour to manufacture goods. HSE presents a 1 day course - 'Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) - Health Surveillance and Exposure Control'. Delivered by medical and scientific experts, this course explains the role of exposure monitoring in protecting worker health and the selection, use and maintenance of exposure controls. It also provides information about controlling RCS exposures in the workplace. Aimed at health care professionals with responsibility for workers exposed to RCS, occupational health technicians and health and safety representatives, 'Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) - Health Surveillance and Exposure Control' takes place on Tuesday 05 March 2019 at HSE's laboratory near Buxton, Derbyshire. These could cause harm to employees, contractors and other people. COSHH is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health.
All employers must carry out a risk assessment and those employing five or more employees must also record significant findings. They must must provide information about the hazards, risks and control measures, and instruction and training to use the control measures. Many people tasked with COSHH assessments are unsure what is required or where to get information. Once the initial assessment is complete, they are often uncertain on how to approach control, and how to judge when control is adequate. HSE's 2 day course, 'COSHH Training - Practical Assessment and Control' will benefit anyone tasked with completing COSHH assessments and/or implementing controls, whether for the first time or to improve skills. Day one covers assessing exposure and risk using case studies and example scenarios. Day two moves on to implementing effective and reliable exposure controls and includes practical demonstrations. COSHH Training - Practical Assessment and Control will take place at HSE's laboratory near Buxton, Derbyshire on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 March 2019.
