Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Risk Management

Our exposure to display screen technology is continuing to increase, with reported levels of up to 9 hours per day spent consuming media on devices such as computers, laptops, smartphones and tablet PCs.

Greater exposure means that the effects of preventable risks such as poor or fixed postures can accumulate and lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

MSDs account for 24% of all UK working days lost due to work-related ill health; that's an estimated 6.6million days lost in the year 2017/18. (Source: HSE Statistics)

HSE is to run a 1 day course on Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Risk Management at its laboratory near Buxton, Derbyshire on Thursday 14 March 2019.

Delivered by experienced ergonomists, this course provides an understanding of DSE risks, an approach to risk management and with the documentation needed to provide your employer with risk assessments.

It will be most beneficial for health and safety providers with limited knowledge or experience of DSE risk management who wish to become a DSE assessor.  It's also suitable for those who wish to update or consolidate their knowledge and experience as a DSE assessor.

Manual Handling Training from HSE

Manual Handling for Assessors (Manchester)

Manual handling is one of the main causes of MSDs, which are the second most common occupational injuries within the UK.

Almost half of all work-related ill health cases seen by general practitioners (GPs) are MSD related.

Prevention and control of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) is a major priority and to assist this HSE has published a simple but effective risk assessment method called the MAC tool

This enables the identification of key manual handling risk factors, enabling them to be eliminated or managed in the most cost effective way.

On Wednesday 13 March 2019, HSE will run a 1 day course - 'Manual Handling for Assessors' - at
ETC Venues, Portland Street, Manchester.

Delivered by an HSE ergonomist with specialist knowledge in MSDs, this course will equip you with the knowledge to help recognise, assess and reduce manual handling risks in your organisation.

It is aimed at employers who wish to implement manual handling risk assessment and control within their organisation, but will benefit those already involved in manual handling risk reduction who need more formal or in-depth training.

Stress: From Intervention to Prevention

NEW - Stress: from Intervention to Prevention

Improve Your Approach to Tackling Work-related Stress

Work-related stress accounts for 57% of all working days lost due to ill health (equivalent to 15.4 million days lost to stress).

This is why forward-thinking organisations are incorporating stress management within their wellbeing initiatives, helping to raise awareness of the issues, break down stigma and protect their people.

Join us for a one-day event to reflect upon, re-evaluate and refine your current approach to managing work-related stress.

We'll focus on implementing preventive measures that avoid harm, and we'll demonstrate the importance of a holistic approach that can include support initiatives such as mental health first aid, mindfulness and resilience training.

We'll also bring you the latest thinking from HSE specialist inspectors who will explain how the enforcement approach is evolving.
