COSHH Assessments Most businesses use substances, or products that are mixtures of substances. Some processes create substances. These could cause harm to employees, contractors and other people. COSHH is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health.
All employers must carry out a risk assessment and those employing five or more employees must also record significant findings. They must must provide information about the hazards, risks and control measures, and instruction and training to use the control measures. Many people tasked with COSHH assessments are unsure what is required or where to get information. Once the initial assessment is complete, they are often uncertain on how to approach control, and how to judge when control is adequate. HSE's 2 day course, 'COSHH Training - Practical Assessment and Control' will benefit anyone tasked with completing COSHH assessments and/or implementing controls, whether for the first time or to improve skills. Day one covers assessing exposure and risk using case studies and example scenarios. Day two moves on to implementing effective and reliable exposure controls and includes practical demonstrations. |  Refresh your Knowledge of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)
Hand-arm vibration comes from the use of hand-held power tools and is the cause of significant ill health (painful and disabling disorders of the blood vessels, nerves and joints).
HAVS is a complex condition that requires practitioners to have a good understanding of the anatomy and neurology of the hands. The literature on HAVS continues to grow with a new classification and way of testing sensory perception in the digits. Examination skills are difficult to maintain if they are not regularly practised. The implications of poor practice or misdiagnosis are significant for both the employer and the employee. On Wednesday 17 April 2019, HSL is running a 1 day course - Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) Refresher - at its laboratory near Buxton, Derbyshire. Presented by HSE's Dr Jon Poole MD FRCP FFOM and Dr Howard Mason PhD, the course covers a range of HAVS-related topics including risk assessment, standardised tests, clinical assessment and differential diagnoses and clinical management. 'Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) Refresher' is aimed at occupational physicians, occupational health nurses and general practitioners with an interest in occupational health who have successfully completed the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM) two-day Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome course.
