Mental Health Awareness Week brings work-related stress to the fore

mental health

13 May marked the start of Mental Health Awareness Week - but make sure you support your staff and colleagues at all times.

Work-related stress accounted for 44% of all ill-health cases and 57% of all working days lost due to ill health in 2017-18, with 15.4 million working days lost due to this condition.

Our Go Home Healthy campaign partly focuses on preventing work-related stress.

At our HSE Books website we have guidance, tools and publications that will help you manage stress in the workplace and recognise the signs and symptoms of stress at work.

Make sure your workers are protected with PPE

ppe

Employers have duties concerning the provision and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at work.

PPE is equipment that will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. It can include safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses. It also includes respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

If PPE is needed, you must provide this for your employees free of charge.

Prepare a health and safety policy with our step-by-step guide

policy

The law says that every business must have a policy for managing health and safety.

A health and safety policy sets out your general approach to health and safety. It explains how you will manage health and safety in your business and should clearly say who does what, when and how.

Visit our step-by-step guide, which shows you how to write a health and safety policy, as well as outlining the legal requirements.

The guide is part of our updated health and safety made simple website.
