COSHH assessment training from HSE

COSHH training - Practical Assessment and Control

COSHH is the law that requires employers to control
substances that are hazardous to health.

All employers must carry out a risk assessment and those with five or more employees must also record significant findings.

They must must provide information about the hazards, risks and control measures, and instruction and training to use the control measures.

Many people tasked with COSHH assessments are unsure what is required or where to get information.  Once the initial assessment is complete, they may ben uncertain on how to approach control, and how to judge when control is adequate.

HSE's 2 day course, 'COSHH Training - Practical Assessment and Control' will benefit anyone tasked with completing COSHH assessments and/or implementing controls, whether for the first time or to improve skills.

COSHH Training - Practical Assessment and Control will take place at HSE's Science and Research Centre near Buxton, Derbyshire on  Wednesday 07 and Thursday 08 August 2019.

The course will run from Monday 30 September to Friday 04 October 2019 at HSE's Science and Research Centre in Buxton, Derbyshire.

Attendees will achieve a greater understanding of the work carried out within a microbiological Containment Level 3 facility, the equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) used and the concepts and philosophy of working with biological agents at that level of containment.

The course will also cover the design, management, maintenance, testing and legislative requirements associated with Containment Level 3 laboratory facilities. It is designed to align with HSE's guidance 'Management and operation of microbiological containment laboratories'. (PDF)

Different aspects of the course will be presented by specialist members of HSE's Microbiology Research Team; PPE specialists; ventilation systems specialists and human factors specialists.

Biological monitoring for chemical exposures from HSE

Biological Monitoring for Chemical
Exposures at Work

Biological monitoring is based on the analysis of hazardous substances or their metabolites in urine, blood or breath.

It is used to assess chemical exposures by inhalation, ingestion and absorption through the skin and is valuable where control of exposure relies on personal protective equipment.

It can also be used to investigate the behavioural aspects of exposure controls.

On Thursday 18 July, HSE will hold a 1-day workshop Biological monitoring for chemical exposures at work at its Science and Research Centre in Buxton, Derbyshire.

Aimed at occupational hygiene and health providers who are interested in the benefits of biological monitoring, the workshop covers the practicalities of establishing a biological monitoring programme, how it can be used to assess chemical exposures and how to interpret the results.

The workshop will also benefit anyone with responsibility for their organisation's worker health protection.
