Roofing company fined after worker is injured in fall from height

A roofing firm have been sentenced for breaches of safety regulations after an employee fell through a gap in scaffolding and sustained multiple injuries.

A 20-year-old labourer, who was moving insulation panels on a roof, fell 3 metres through a gap in the scaffolding onto an office roof below, causing injuries to his left wrist and hand.

HSE's investigation found that, although the company had taken measures to reduce the risk of a fall, the scaffolding did not fully extend along the roof in the area where the insulation panels were stacked and stored.

Start conversations with workers and support good mental health

stressed worker

In Great Britain over 800,000 workers suffered from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2020/21.

Our Talking Toolkits can help you start conversations to identify causes of stress for your workers and identify possible solutions.

Visit HSE's website for more guidance on managing work-related stress.

Our Working Minds campaign raises awareness about how to recognise and respond to the signs of stress to protect workers and support good mental health to help people stay well.

Measure your safety culture with HSE's Safety Climate Tool

Evidence shows that a strong safety culture is associated with fewer workplace near-misses and injuries.

The Safety Climate Tool (SCT) has been carefully designed by scientists to assess the attitudes of individuals within an organisation towards health and safety issues.

Using a simple online questionnaire, it explores your workers' attitudes and perceptions in key areas of health and safety, while guaranteeing anonymity.

Register for a live webinar demonstration of the SCT on 6 April at 11.00am.

You can also watch our SCT video for more information.
