PPE at work regulations have changed

Various PPE items

This week the Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Amendment) Regulations 2022 (PPER 2022) came into force. They amend the 1992 Regulations (PPER 1992).

Under PPER 2022, the types of duties and responsibilities on employers and employees under PPER 1992 will extend to limb (b) workers, as defined in PPER 2022.

If PPE is required, employers must ensure their workers have sufficient information, instruction and training on the use of PPE.

Our revised PPE guidance explains how you can comply with the Regulations. It includes:

  • details of the types of PPE available
  • the hazards that may require PPE to be used
  • advice on the selection, use and maintenance of PPE

This includes a revised version of our publication Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended) Guidance on Regulations. This includes information on conformity marking, following the UK's exit from the EU.

COVID-19 restrictions are being replaced by public health advice

COVID-19 will remain a public health issue and guidance for workplaces is being replaced with public health advice.

You can check the latest position and timescales for the nation you are working in:

HSE no longer requires every business to consider COVID-19 in their risk assessment or to have specific measures in place.

There is a requirement to protect those who come into contact with the virus due to their work activity.

Our web page for workplaces on COVID-19 provides more information and links to public health and other government body advice.

You can find guidance on the circumstances when you should make a report under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR).

HSE will continue to expect employers to comply with the requirements for cleaning, ventilation and welfare facilities in the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

Construction sites must provide adequate facilities in line with the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015.

Inspectors are visiting woodworking businesses across Great Britain

male woodworker

HSE is currently inspecting woodworking businesses to ensure dutyholders know the established health risks associated with the industry.

Each year, around 12,000 people die from work-related lung diseases linked to past exposure to hazardous substances at work.

This includes inhalation of wood dust that can cause occupational asthma and, in the case of hardwoods, sinonasal cancer. These deaths are preventable if exposure to the risks is effectively controlled.

Inspectors will check that:

  • woodwork is planned correctly to minimise risk
  • adequate control measures are in place to protect workers' health

Through our inspections of a variety of woodworking businesses, we are highlighting the risks of occupational asthma and the devastating impact lung disease has on workers' lives.

Further information can be found in our press release.
