Protect your workers from MSDs

Employers must protect workers from the risks of MSDs being caused or made worse by work.

MSDs include injuries and conditions that can affect the back, joints and limbs.

Our MSD website has information and advice on a range of related topics including:

We are also running a free webinar on 22 June (10.30am) on how to effectively manage the risk of MSDs in your workplace and protect your home workers.

Protecting pregnant workers and new mothers

Our advice has changed and you must now carry out an individual risk assessment for pregnant workers and new mothers.

There will be little practical change as you must already consider risks to women of childbearing age in your general risk assessment.

The difference is that you must also carry out an individual risk assessment that covers a worker's specific needs when they inform you in writing that they:

  • are pregnant
  • have given birth in the last 6 months, or
  • are breastfeeding

Our updated webpages provide advice on talking to workers, and protecting them from common risks like working at height and lifting heavy loads.

There is dedicated advice for workers themselves.

We also have a video with practical advice on how to keep pregnant workers and new mothers safe.

Suspended sentences issued after worker suffers fatal injuries in roof fall

Two men have received suspended sentences after a worker fell over five metres through fragile roof panels, suffering injuries that subsequently proved fatal.

An investigation by HSE found that the method of work was unsafe and there were inadequate precautions to prevent or mitigate against falls from or through the roof.

The investigation also found there was no effective assessment of risk, selection and use of appropriate work equipment, no safe system of work and no effective supervision.
