Temperature in the workplace: working safely in hot conditions

thermometer

In offices or similar environments, the temperature in workplaces must be reasonable.

There's no law for maximum working temperature, or when it's too hot to work.

Employers must stick to health and safety at work law, including:

  • keeping the temperature at a comfortable level, sometimes known as thermal comfort
  • providing clean and fresh air

Read about what you can do to feel more comfortable.

HSE's temperature website has practical guidance on what you can do to manage the risks, including:

Workplace fatality figures for 2021/22 released

HSE recently released its annual workplace fatality figures for 2021/22.

The figures show that a total of 123 workers were killed at work in Great Britain between April 2021 and March 2022.

The three most common causes of fatal injuries continue to be falling from height, being struck by a moving vehicle, and being struck by a moving object.

Also published were the annual figures for mesothelioma, a cancer that can be caused by past exposure to asbestos. The figures show that 2,544 people died from the disease in 2020, in line with the average of 2,523 deaths over the previous 8 years.

Health board fined following the death of an elderly patient

A health board has been fined £850,000 following the death of a vulnerable patient who left a hospital ward unnoticed through an unsecured door.

A 74-year-old patient on Llynfi Ward at Maesteg hospital, who was known to have wandered in the past, left the hospital unnoticed by hospital staff on a very cold evening with snow on the ground. The patient fell on a path, resulting in her fatal injury.

HSE's investigation found that no reasonably practicable measures were taken at Llynfi Ward until after the fatal incident to protect vulnerable patients from wandering and potentially coming to serious harm.
