Construction sites across Great Britain are being targeted as part of a health inspection initiative supported by the 'Work Right Construction: Your health. Your future' campaign. Site inspections focusing on moving and handling construction materials will begin on 3 October 2022. We will be checking employers and workers: An estimated 40,000 construction workers experienced work-related MSDs last year. Employers have a legal responsibility to protect their workers from ill health and should involve them in managing the risks to their health, just as they would with safety. To help you prepare for the inspections we have advice for employers, workers and small builders. | A firm has been fined £115,000 for health and safety breaches. A worker was repairing a box-making machine when his hand became caught in the chain drive and was cut off at the wrist. HSE's investigation discovered the company's risk assessment was neither suitable nor sufficient. It had not considered the risks created from use of the machine, including during maintenance activities. There was no safe system of work in place to ensure safe isolation and access for tasks such as maintenance. Read this press release to find more details on this incident.
