Construction sites across Great Britain are being targeted as part of HSE's latest health inspection initiative supported by the 'Work Right Construction: Your health. Your future' campaign.

Site inspections started on Monday 4 September and will run for 8 weeks.

Focusing on moving and handling construction materials, HSE inspectors are checking that employers and workers:

  • know the risks
  • plan their work to eliminate or substitute the risks, where possible
  • where that is not possible, are using sensible control measures to protect workers from aches, pain and discomfort in joints, muscles and bones known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

Manufacturing firm fined £200,000 after workers injured by explosion

Three workers sustained burns while operating a furnace at the company's site.

The men had been melting a large amount of steel before an explosion took place in the furnace. They suffered burns to their faces, heads and backs.

HSE's investigation found that the company was aware of the risk associated with wet scrap metal being added to the furnace. However, the protection from rain in place at the time of the incident was not adequately implemented and maintained.
