This week's issue contains a reminder that children should be kept safely away from work activities in agriculture, as more of them may be on farms during the summer holiday. Every year children are killed or seriously injured during agricultural work activities. Most of them are family members of those working on farms. HSE's recently published the Farming fatalities report for 2021/22 (PDF), which shows that 8 children were killed in farming between April 2017 and March 2022. Unfortunately, there have been more child fatalities on farms since then. During the summer holiday, more children may be at home on the farm. Farmers should ensure that children are kept safely away from workplace activities. You can find advice and guidance in our publication Preventing accidents to children on farms. HSE's agriculture website has a range of resources to help farmers manage risks appropriately, as well as further guidance about keeping children safe on the farm. | A cargo handling company has been fined £200,000 after an employee was fatally crushed between shipping containers while working the night shift in a container park. HSE's investigation found that the company routinely failed to provide adequate supervision of operatives and drivers working on the night shift to ensure safe systems of work were followed. This included failing to: - use safe walkways to segregate pedestrians from vehicles
- safely operate container stackers by driving with shipping containers in the raised position to allow visibility
Read our press release to find more details on this incident. Other recent prosecution cases include: Lone workers can be at greater risk of harm as they may not have anyone to help or support them if things go wrong. Employers should provide training, supervision, monitoring and support for those working alone. Our free-to-download leaflet Protecting lone workers: How to manage the risks of working alone is for anyone who employs lone workers, or engages them as contractors etc, including self-employed people. The leaflet is supported by our lone working webpages which include advice aimed at lone workers themselves. | Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is prevalent on major hazard plant, including nuclear and chemical plants, oil refineries and offshore installations. It continues to represent a major safety threat, having been responsible for a number of major hydrocarbon releases. It also presents industry with a range of business assurance and continuity challenges that bring significant costs each year. HSE is hosting a workshop to discuss the options for a shared research project, where you can join us to discuss the challenges and identify opportunities.
